Sizing matters - when wearing wigs! (1)

While travelling over the last few weeks, it was surprising to learn that a lot of those around us who have been wearing alternative hair have never actually had their head measured.

Many of the ladies we met had been ordering the same cap size from different companies, hoping for the best.

What many new wig wearers may not know is that every company uses a different cap construction, as well as sizing chart. Therefore, a small from one company may not fit the same as a small from another company.

Measuring your head when wearing a wig is important for several reasons:

  1. Accurate fit: Wigs come in various sizes, and each person's head size can differ. By measuring your head, you can determine the appropriate wig size that will fit securely and comfortably. Be sure to write down your measurements so you can easily refer to them when ordering a new piece.
  2. Comfort: A well-fitted wig ensures a comfortable experience. If the wig is too tight, it can cause headaches or discomfort, while a loose wig may feel insecure and constantly require readjustment. You may even worry about going outside on a windy day, or constantly be thinking about whether your wig is still in place. Measuring your head helps you find a wig that fits properly and provides a comfortable fit throughout the day.
  3. Natural look: A properly fitted wig enhances the natural appearance. If the wig is too small, it may not cover your natural hair completely or sit properly on your head. This is usually the case when the front to nape is not properly measured. On the other hand, an oversized wig may appear loose or unnatural.
  4. Ease of use: A properly fitted wig is easier to put on and secure. When the wig fits well, it stays in place, reducing the need for constant adjustment.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I used to readjust my first wig because the sizing wasn’t right. I’d walk around school pulling the front pieces of my hair down, because I was constantly worried about it slipping up. Over time I learned how to do the proper measurements, by using a sizing guide similar to the one I’ve attached below.

It’s important to note that everyone wears their wig slightly differently, and with a bit of practice, as well as trial and error, you will figure out how you like to wear yours. We all have different head shapes and the same wig will sit slightly differently on each person.
